County Council Committee to Discuss ‘Nutritional Labeling’ for Restaurant Menus

Council Committee Agendas for Monday, Sept. 24, Also Include FY 09 Priorities for Schools, Montgomery College

ROCKVILLE, Sept. 21, 2007—The Montgomery County Council’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, is scheduled to discuss a proposal that would require chain restaurants with at least 10 national locations to include certain nutritional information on menus and menu boards in their Montgomery locations.
A public hearing was held on Sept. 18 on the bill proposed by Councilmember George Leventhal and co-sponsored by Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg. The HHS Committee, which is chaired by Councilmember Leventhal and includes Councilmembers Trachtenberg and Roger Berliner, will be held at the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville. The meeting will be broadcast live on County Cable Montgomery (CCM).

At 9:30 a.m. Monday, the Education Committee, which is chaired by Mike Knapp and includes Councilmembers Phil Andrews and Valerie Ervin, will hear representatives of Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College identify their major priorities for the Fiscal Year 2009 operating budget.

The Education Committee also will receive a briefing from the Council’s Office of Legislative Oversight on a report it prepared reviewing Montgomery County Public Schools plant operations.

Among the findings of the OLO report is that the Division of School Plant Operations “performs well despite persistent challenges with student restrooms.”

The meeting will be broadcast live on CCM.

At 2:15 p.m. Monday, the Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee, which is chaired by Council President Marilyn Praisner and includes Councilmembers Marc Elrich and Nancy Floreen, will address several issues including three proposed Zoning Text Amendments. One of the proposed amendments would allow developers of properties in central business district zones the option of making payments to the County instead of requiring the provision of on-site public use space or the provision of public facilities and amenities. The amendment also would allow the option of providing off-site public use space.
