The Montgomery County Council today overwhelmingly rejected the proposal by the School Board to build a Seven Locks Elementary School replacement on the Kendale site, a proposal that had drawn near unanimous opposition from the community as well as opposition from two School Board members.

A majority of Councilmembers will vote next week to approve a proposal to build a better alternative.

“I’m pleased that the County Council has stood with the kids and the parents and the community in advancing constructive efforts to alleviate overcrowding in the elementary schools of the Churchill cluster,” said Council President George Leventhal.

“I think it’s time we all moved forward together – the Council, the School Board, and the community. The Kendale site is dead. It’s time to stop talking and start doing.”

“The most important thing any public official should do is listen to the community,” said Councilmember Howard Denis, who led the fight against the Kendale site. “The community has spoken loud and clear. The Kendale site made no sense. Next week we will put the taxpayers’ money on a real solution to address overcrowding in the cluster.”  # # #
