County Councilmember Nancy Floreen, Congressman Van Hollen to Host Job Search Workshop and Information Fair
Saturday, Nov. 14, Free Program in Rockville Will Feature Seminars for Traditional Searches Plus New Avenues to Success, Including Volunteering, Starting a Small Business
ROCKVILLE, Md., October 30, 2009—Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Floreen (D-at large) and Congressman Chris Van Hollen will co-host a Job Search Workshop and Information Fair on Saturday, Nov. 14, at the County Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville. The information fair will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with seminars starting every hour. The event is free to the public, but pre-registration is requested.
The event will not have potential employers on site. It will feature County and federal agencies, non-profit organizations and private companies. They will help attendees be better prepared when they set out to seek their next job, and beyond that, to have polished skills when they are closing in on potential jobs—such as, at the interview stage.
“Montgomery County has lost 14,000 jobs since July of 2008. Getting our residents back to work is my top priority,” said Councilmember Floreen. “Job hunters face real challenges in today’s economy, but opportunities still exist and we are offering this fair to help people tap into new ways of finding success.”
Seminars at the fair will include: • Interviewing Skills presented by Montgomery Works • Applying for a Federal Job presented by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management • Effective Job Search Strategies presented by the Montgomery County Commission for Women Counseling and Career Center • Making the Most of Non-Working Time presented by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center and Coffey Consulting • Starting Your Own Business (in English and Spanish) presented by the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development and the Latino Economic Development Corporation.
“Rebuilding the economy is our top priority, and I’m committed to working with the federal, state and local governments to make sure Marylanders are able to get back on their feet and back into the workforce,” said Congressman Van Hollen (D-Maryland). “This job workshop is part of that effort, making sure people have the skills they need to be successful.”
Information booths at the fair will include: • Montgomery County Office of Human Resources • Commission for Women Counseling and Career Center • U.S. Census • Montgomery Works • Montgomery County Volunteer Center • Montgomery County Department of Economic Development • Latino Economic Development Corporation • Montgomery County Department of Recreation
Free parking is available in the visitors’ garage behind the building, or it is a short walk from the Rockville Metro. Residents can find more information at www.montgomerycoungymd.gov/council. To pre-register, call 240-777-7959.
