Upon the filing of a petition, the Court can issue a protective order to prevent or deter the recurrence of acts of family abuse against you. Violence or threats not involving family may be addressed with a peace order. When you visit the program, the staff will determine which petition is appropriate for your situation.
A petition for a protective order protecting against further acts of violence by an intimate partner is filed in District Court or Circuit Court. A petition for a peace order, to protect against violence by others, is filed with the District Court.
If granted, the order will be issued on a temporary basis. This order is good for no more than 7 days after it is served. Another hearing will be held and a final order may be issued. If issued, a protective order is good for up to 12 months and a peace order is good for 6 months.
