Certificate of Appreciation for Dave Honchalk
and Smith Environmental Education Center

In early 2006, the Rainscapes Program was pleased to present a Certificate of Appreciation to Dave Honchalk, the supervisor of the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center in Derwood.  Dave accepted the award both on his behalf and that of his staff and the members of the Outdoor Education Association.  The certificate specifically expressed recognition and appreciation: "For your ongoing dedication and material support to the Department of Environmental Protection’s Rainscapes Initiative and for your substantial assistance in providing hands-on watershed education opportunities through innovative workshops and demonstration rain gardens, as well as for your invaluable contributions and enthusiasm for the County’s numerous water quality and stream restoration programs."  Presenting the award to Dave Honchalk (second from right) on behalf of County Executive Douglas M. Duncan was Craig Carson, Watershed Planner, Joe Keyser, and Meo Curtis, DEP Senior Planning Specialist, all from the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection.

Recognition for Coca-Cola Partnership
Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) staff members Craig Carson, Meo Curtis, and Joe Keyser presented a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of County Executive Douglas M. Duncan to Randy Feister, Warehouse Manager for the Coca-Cola Distribution Center in Rockville, Maryland, in recognition for the ongoing support provided to the Rainscapes Program, especially the "Make-and-Take" Rain Barrel Workshop series, by Coca-Cola during the past several years.

Through the efforts of Randy, and his predecessor, Steve Sussman, several hundred food-grade plastic syrup barrels were brought to the Distribution Center and donated to the Rainscapes Program at no cost.  During the campaign's successful run, those same barrels were transformed into rain barrels at workshops attended by residents, and put to good use in reducing stormwater runoff while protecting water quality.  By providing the barrels for free, the Coca-Cola Distribution Center allowed the Department of Environmental Protection to "stretch" out grant funding to produce even more barrels for homeowners and schools.
