Biography

 Valerie Ervin, the first African American woman to serve on the Montgomery County Council, has a history of service to the County with a strong focus on improving the County’s public education system and enhancing educational opportunities for students.  As a Silver Spring resident for more than two decades, she is keenly aware of the issues that affect District 5 and is committed to a proactive legislative agenda that will improve the lives of residents.   
 
As a member of the Board of Education from 2004 to 2006 and Chair of the Board’s Research and Evaluation Committee, Ms. Ervin developed solutions to a variety of issues that impact the lives of students and their families.  Ms. Ervin is a former PTSA co president of Montgomery Blair High School PTSA, served as NAACP Parents’ Council representative, was a founding member of   Blacks United for Excellence in Education, and participated in the Montgomery County Education Forum.  Ms. Ervin has also served as a member of the Superintendent’s Committee on Gifted and Talented Education and the Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families. 

Prior to her service on the School Board, Ms. Ervin was Chief of Staff to the president of the Montgomery County Council.  In this capacity, she focused on issues associated with the environment, health and human services, and transportation.  Ms. Ervin was also the Dean of Students at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Maryland.  

Ms. Ervin holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Baltimore.
She is a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville, Maryland and has two sons, who attended Montgomery Blair High School.  Her oldest son is currently a sophomore at Warren Wilson College and her other son is completing his undergraduate work at the University of New Mexico.
