Barn Cat Program

The Montgomery County Animals Services and Adoption Center’s (MCASAC) barn cat program places fully vetted cats into safe, independent-living settings such as barns, outbuildings or even warehouses. A barn cat program can save lives and help a community’s felines and humans co-exist peacefully with each other in a mutually beneficial partnership. By welcoming a barn cat onto your property, you are supporting the safest way to control the rodent population on your property. There are no poisons for children and pets to get into and no need to set nasty rodent traps! Barn Cats will keep rodents away and you’ll have the satisfaction of giving them a much-needed home.

Cats placed into MCASAC’s barn cat program will usually fit into one or more of these three categories: Barn Cat Flyer

  • Cats who are social but too feisty when interacting with people and benefit from having a “job” to do
  • Cats who are shy or fearful of people and prefer the company of other cats and animals
  • Cats whose litterbox habits make them unsuitable to live indoors (and for whom medical issues have been ruled out)
All barn cats are fully vetted, including being spayed or neutered, before they are available for the barn cat program. Individuals interested in adopting barn cats must be able to provide the cats with shelter, food, water and vet care. Barns, outbuildings, factories and warehouses are all considered suitable shelters for the cats. MCASAC will consider adopting to any setting that can provide adequate food, shelter and veterinary care to the cats.

Each Barn Cat’s adoption is FREE and includes:
  • Shelter physical/wellness exam
  • Spay or neuter surgery
  • Microchip
  • Initial vaccinations (Rabies & Feline Distemper Combo, a.k.a. FVRCP)
  • Initial flea treatment
  • Deworming
  • Barn cat instructions to help introduce and care for your barn cats

“My adoption of two cats through your Barn Cat program has been a fabulous success story. The cats tell me that they are
happy there and their presence insures that the critters will not also settle in. The county made all things easy. The three week [acclimation] period went fast…And no signs of unwanted
critters since the cats were brought into
the barn!”
