County Offers H1N1 Vaccinations to Target Priority Groups at Sunday Clinic; Nasal Spray and Injectable Doses Available

Montgomery County Health Officials will offer free H1N1 vaccine to individuals in the high-risk priority groups, as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease:

Children and young adults ages six months to 24 years; Pregnant women; Adults 25 to 64 years with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, HIV/AIDS or cancer; Adults who are caretakers of infants younger than six months of age; and Health care and emergency medical services workers.

Because of limited clinic space, individuals attending the clinic should be prepared to wait in line outdoors and should dress appropriately. Attendees may want to bring chairs and parents should bring snacks, books and toys to keep children occupied during the wait. Families can assign one person to wait in line while others wait in the car.

Montgomery County Hosts 12th Annual Thanksgiving Parade

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, as Grand Marshal, and other local elected officials will ride in the parade. Among the musical units will be the Washington Redskins Marching Band and the Bowie State University “Symphony of Soul,” plus local high school bands. Among others appearing will be units representing the Washington Nationals, plus Almas and Boumi Shrine. There will also be giant helium balloons, including “Stewie,” and “Darth Vader,” floats, equestrian units, and Santa, etc.

Traffic notes:

The following roads will close at 7 a.m.:
– northbound Georgia Ave. from East-West Highway to the north side of Colesville Rd., and
– Ellsworth Dr. from Georgia Ave. to the entrance of the Town Square Garage

Free Parking:
Town Square Garage – enter from Cedar St.

LEGGETT TO ANNOUNCE LAUNCH OF PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROMOTION TEAMS ALONG PINEY BRANCH ROAD

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will announce the launch of pedestrian safety promotion teams that will intercept pedestrians engaged in risky behaviors and provide them with information about safe walking practices. This effort is part of the County’s overall strategy to improve pedestrian safety along Piney Branch Road, which has the most pedestrian collisions in the County.

Leggett will also announce the results of a pedestrian survey, construction of traffic calming measures underway on Carroll Avenue, and an action plan that outlines engineering and enforcement improvements to make the Piney Branch corridor safer.

Note to Editors: A Pedestrian Safety Promotion Team will be distributing information in English and Spanish to transit riders and pedestrians.

County Hosts Adoption Ceremony; Finalizes Nearly Two Dozen Adoptions

Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Katherine Savage, along with several other judges, will finalize the adoptions of nearly two dozen children as part of a celebration of National Adoption Month. Following the adoption proceedings (open to the media), Judges, State and County officials and staff from Montgomery County Child Welfare Services, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, will host an appreciation dinner for children and their families.

NOTE TO EDITORS: Parents and children will be available to talk with the media about their adoption experiences through Montgomery County Child Welfare Services. Children range in age from 12 months to 15 years old. Photos may be taken of parents and children.

LEGGETT TO CONVENE SUMMIT ON FUTURE OF LIBRARIES

County Executive Isiah Leggett and Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Parker Hamilton will present a Summit on the Future of Libraries.

Two keynote speakers – Tim Mack, president of the World Future Society, and Stephen Abram, vice-president Innovation for SirsiDynix/chief strategist for SirsiDynix Institute – will set the stage with their look at libraries of the future.

Following their talks, both speakers will participate in an open dialogue with attendees. During separate breakout sessions, participants will then help develop recommendations that will serve as future planning guidelines for Montgomery County Public Libraries in the areas of Technology, Buildings and Strategic Planning.

Leggett will give remarks in the morning (9:15 a.m.) and at the wrap-up session in the afternoon.

Richard Nelson, Director del Departamento de Vivienda y Asuntos Comunitarios del Condado de Montgomery en colaboración con Raymond Skinner, Secretario del Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano del Estado de Maryland; miembros de la Comisión Hispana del Gobernador de Maryland; grupos activistas comunitarios y especialistas en embargos hipotecarios se unen para desarrollar un encuentro educativo dirigido especialmente para asistir a la comunidad Hispana en el proceso de evitar los embargos hipotecarios y retener sus propiedades.

De acuerdo a cifras reveladas en un informe por parte del Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano del Estado, durante el segundo cuarto del 2009 se llevaron a cabo aproximadamente 750 embargos hipotecarios que involucraron a familias Hispanas del Estado de Maryland. La gran mayoría de dichos embargos ocurrieron en los condados de Montgomery y Prince Georges.

County, State Officials Host Bilingual Foreclosure Prevention Workshop “Mortgage Late? Don’t Wait”

Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs Director Richard Nelson will join Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Secretary Raymond Skinner and members of the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs, community groups and foreclosure prevention stakeholders at this homeownership preservation workshop aimed specifically at assisting Hispanic homeowners.

According to DHCD’s second quarter 2009 report in July, there were approximately 750 foreclosures within the Hispanic population in Maryland. Of that, a significant number occurred in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Microsoft Opens New Office in Chevy Chase

Montgomery County Department of Economic Development Director Steve Silverman will join Microsoft executives and employees to celebrate the opening of Microsoft’s first Montgomery County location – a new 134,000 square foot office in the heart of Chevy Chase.

Microsoft’s new office, which the company moved into in June, houses a portion of Microsoft’s U.S. Public Sector, including federal, state, local and educational divisions and Microsoft’s Health Solutions Group, which is focused on health IT products and services. The new facility will ultimately house some 500 new and relocated employees within the next 12 to18 months.
