Help Operation of County’s Inspector General

Bill 33-09 Would Help Promote Good Government by Enabling Inspector General
to Request Independent Legal Representation to Investigate Fraud, Waste and Abuse

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 17, 2009— The Montgomery County Council today approved by an 8-1 vote Bill 33-09 that would enable the County’s Inspector General to request independent legal representation to enhance investigations of fraud, waste and abuse in the County. Councilmember Valerie Ervin was the chief sponsor of the legislation. Council President Phil Andrews and Councilmembers Nancy Floreen, Mike Knapp, Nancy Navarro and Duchy Trachtenberg were cosponsors.

Montgomery Council Approves Bill Requiring Nutrition Information for Menus, Signboards

Chief Sponsor Leventhal’s Legislation Will Have Major Chain Establishments
Disclose Calories, Fat, Sodium, Other Information

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 17, 2009—The Montgomery County Council today approved by an 8-1 vote Bill 19-07 that would require certain County restaurants to post nutritional information on menus and menu boards. The legislation, whose chief sponsor was Councilmember George Leventhal and which was cosponsored by Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg, had recently been amended to reflect provisions being discussed in a similar bill now being considered in Congress.

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 13, 2009—Montgomery County Council Vice President Roger Berliner and representatives from Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) at 12 noon on Monday, Nov. 16, will bring to the Council the future of efficient vehicles by bringing a plug-in hybrid vehicle to the Council Office Building in Rockville.

Vice President Berliner and the BGE representatives will brief Councilmembers on the vehicle’s technology in the Fifth Floor Conference Room of the County Office Building at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville. Montgomery Council Seeks Applicants For County Planning Board Position
Deadline for Applications Is Wed., Jan. 13

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 12, 2009—The Montgomery County Council is seeking applicants to fill one vacancy on the Montgomery County Planning Board. The vacancy was created by the passing of board member Jean Cryor on Nov. 3. Ms. Cryor’s term will expire on June 14, 2011.

Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13.

No more than three members of the Planning Board may be from the same political party, and all members must be residents and registered voters of Montgomery County when appointed. Members serve four-year terms and are limited to two full terms. Ms. Cryor was a Republican. County’s Planning Board Had Proposed Changes to Relax School
Overcrowding and Traffic Congestion Tests

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 12, 2009—The Montgomery County Council on Nov. 10 gave final approval to the 2009-11 County Growth Policy, the purpose of which is to attempt to ensure that public infrastructure is adequate to handle the impact of new development. In approving the policy, the Council rejected major recommendations suggested by the Montgomery County Planning Board to relax or weaken a number of school overcrowding and traffic congestion standards.

ROCKVILLE, Md., November 10, 2009—Montgomery County Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg (D-At Large) today introduced a resolution for the Council, acting as the County’s Board of Health, that would require Limited Service Pregnancy Centers, which are also known as Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs), to notify clients that the center will not be providing medical advice or establishing a doctor-patient relationship. The resolution also would require the CPCs to recommend to the client that she should seek out a qualified health care professional.
