County Offers Mental Health Helpline for Veterans and Their Families; Services to Assist Veterans in Accessing Resources

Montgomery County service members, veterans and their families can now call the County’s Military Helpline--at 301-738-7176—to find out about mental health services, family readiness organizations and housing, employment and transition assistance resources. The Helpline, operated by the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County, is available free of charge Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Callers may leave a message when the helpline is not staffed and calls will be returned within 24 hours.

“We have heard how challenging it can be for veterans and their families to find out about the services available to them,” said County Executive Isiah Leggett, a combat Vietnam veteran. “This helpline can assist them and may help ease their transitions back to the community.”

“We are fortunate to work in a community where so many resources exist for service members and their families, but it can also be difficult to sift through necessary and practical resources depending on the needs of the callers,” said Sharon E. Friedman, LCSW-C, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Montgomery County. “Our Military Outreach Initiative is here to ease the frustration of the service members and veterans in Montgomery County. The resource and information helpline can make finding those resources as easy as one call to the helpline.”

The number for the Military Helpline is 301-738-7176.
