County Executive Isiah Leggett is seeking applicants to fill four vacancies on the Animal Matters Hearing Board for the following positions: two public primary and two public alternate positions. Three incumbents are eligible to apply for reappointment.
The Animal Matters Hearing Board holds hearings to address complaints regarding animal-related nuisances and issues any orders necessary for abatement, is responsible for hearing and determining appeals regarding licenses that have been denied or revoked by the Department of Police, Division of Animal Control and Humane Treatment, and makes recommendations concerning the operation of animal control facilities in the County. There are five members and one alternate for each member in the following categories: one representative of the Humane Society, three public members, and one licensed animal fancier.
Members serve three-year terms without compensation, and attend an average of two to four meetings per month in the evenings to conduct hearings. Members are required to file a confidential financial disclosure statement within 15 days of Council confirmation and each annual period thereafter.

Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Members of this Board are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for meetings attended. Leggett’s appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications of those selected for appointment are made public as part of the confirmation process.
