Veirs Mill Road, the focus of the MD 586 BRT study, is a commuter corridor, with the flow of traffic largely balanced in the eastbound and westbound directions between the two, large central business districts--Wheaton and Rockville. Smaller commercial districts exist at Randolph Road and just west of Twinbrook Parkway. Residential uses fill in much of the rest of the corridor. Service roads that provide access to residential properties exist along many sections of the roadway, consuming a significant part of the right-of-way.
The Veirs Mill Road corridor experiences some of the highest existing transit volumes in Montgomery County and for that reason has long been considered for bus enhancements.
For more information on this corridor, see the Countywide Transit Corridors Functional Master Plan.
