Court Interpreter
- How do I know if I need an interpreter in court?
If you think you might have Limited English Proficiency (LEP), that is you have difficulty adequately hearing, understanding or communicating effectively in English in a court proceeding, you might consider requesting a court interpreter.
If you know someone may be LEP, you can ask some probing questions to find out if he or she needs a court interpreter. Below are some of the questions that you might try:
“Please tell the court your name and address.”
“Please tell us your birthday, how old you are, and where you were born.”
“How did you come to court today?”
“What kind of work do you do?”
“Please tell the court how comfortable you feel speaking and understanding English.”
- How do I request an interpreter for my case?
You can request an interpreter by filling out the form (click here to download the form) and sending the completed form to the Clerk's Office. The form must be received 2 weeks prior to your court date.
- How do I cancel my interpreter request?
Contact the Clerk's Office immediately either by phone at (240)777-9467 or fax (240)777-9468 noting the requirement is no longer required.

How do I find out if I need to report for jury service?
The Jury Commissioner’s Office maintains a roster of possible jurors called a “jury pool”, comprised of Montgomery County residents who are licensed Maryland motor vehicle drivers and/or registered voters. Each year, 80,000 potential jurors are randomly selected from this jury pool. Throughout the year, each of these 80,000 potential jurors receives a Juror Questionnaire to establish whether he/she is qualified to serve as a juror in Montgomery County. The responses to the Juror Questionnaire will be reviewed by the Jury Commissioner’s Office to see if you meet the criteria to serve as a juror. Once deemed qualified to serve, a Jury Summons will be mailed to the prospective juror with a specific date to fulfill jury service.
