Investigation of Complaints

The Division's Animal Services Officers respond to and investigate over 9,000 complaints annually about public nuisance animals, cruelty to animals, and dangerous animals. Officers enforce county and state animal-related laws.

An additional 5,000 field responses are provided annually by the Montgomery County Humane Society, Inc., as part of its contract with Montgomery County.

Emergency Animal Rescue

Trained drivers pick up sick and injured stray and wild animals 24 hours a day. This service is provided by the Montgomery County Humane Society as part of its contract with Montgomery County. The 24 hour emergency animal rescue phone number is 240-773-5900.

Lost and Found Pets

Central files, updated daily, aid in reuniting lost pets with their owners.

Anyone who loses a pet or finds someone else's pet should call the animal shelter immediately at 240-773-5960, option #2.

To reclaim a lost pet impounded at the animal shelter, the owner must pay impoundment, board and field services fees, and show proof of a current rabies vaccination and license. In addition, the owner may be subject to fines for any non-compliance with county and state laws.

Inspection/licensing of pet shops, riding stables, boarding kennels, commercial kennels and animal fanciers

Commercial animal facilities and animal fanciers licensed and inspected by the Division.

Exotic Bird Licensing and Inspections

The Division licenses and inspects breeders and sellers of exotic birds as part of the Health Department's psittacosis prevention program.
