CONCERN FOR DARFUR … About 30 students representing seven Montgomery County high schools visited the County Council on Feb. 27, asking Councilmembers to support a bill that would prohibit the Montgomery County Employees’ Retirement System from investing in certain businesses conducting operations in civil-war torn Republic of Sudan under certain circumstances. The students, who represented Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Blair, Magruder, Northwest, Quince Orchard, Silver Spring International and Walter Johnson high schools, discussed the issue with Councilmembers Phil Andrews, Roger Berliner, Marc Elrich, Nancy Floreen, George Leventhal and Duchy Trachtenberg. The legislators, who will hold a public hearing on Bill 3-08 on Tuesday, March 4, were told of atrocities the Sudanese government has committed against those living in the Darfur region of Sudan. HOME CONTRACTORS … Montgomery County Councilmembers Marc Elrich, left, and George Leventhal, second from right, on Jan. 28 announced they would introduce a bill that would make Montgomery the first county in the nation to require contracts between certain domestic workers and their employers. Joining them in announcing the proposed legislation, which would apply to workers such as cooks, housecleaners and nannies who work at least 20 hours per work for a single employer, were domestic workers and representatives of organizations that support rights for working women. The bill is scheduled for a public hearing before the Council on Feb. 26.

GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS … The Montgomery County Council on Jan. 22 joined the campaign against gun violence by showing its support of Reaching Out To Others Together (ROOT). ROOT is a non-profit organization, founded in June 2002, that is committed to advocacy, awareness and education to reduce the number of incidents of youth violence and gun violence perpetrated by and against youth. At the proclamation presentation in Rockville were, left to right: Ava Harrison of ROOT; Kevin Dwyer, an educational and child mental health consultant; Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg; Kenneth Barnes, Sr., who founded ROOT following the murder of his son; Franklin Tucker of ROOT; and Councilmembers Valerie Ervin, Nancy Floreen and Marc Elrich.

BREAKING NEW GROUND … Elected officials and representatives from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services joined community members on Thursday, Nov. 29, to break ground for the new one-story, 16,770-square foot Germantown/Kingsview Fire Station at the intersection of Route 118 and Clopper Road. When completed in late 2008, the station will be the first new Fire and Rescue facility built in Germantown since 1980. TAKING A BITE OUT OF TRANS FATS … Montgomery County Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg (front right) on Monday, March 26, hosted a food tasting event in Rockville to demonstrate the benefits of cooking without trans fats. On March 27, she will introduce a bill that would make Montgomery County the first county in the U.S. to ban trans fats in restaurant-cooked foods. Among those at the March 26 event were Jeff Black (front left), who has eliminated trans fats in most foods cooked in his four restaurants.
