RECOGNIZING RECOVERY MONTH …The Montgomery County Council on Sept. 23 recognized those dedicated to helping others recover from addictions and saluted some youngsters who were succeeding in their personal battles. The Council issued a proclamation in honor of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Councilmembers Duchy Trachtenberg (holding proclamation), George Leventhal (back, third from left) and Roger Berliner (back, third from right) led the ceremonies.

 
RECOGNIZING FOSTER PARENTS … The Montgomery County Council and County Executive Isiah Leggett on June 24 recognized those who serve as foster parents in the County. The Foster Parent Association is a collaborative effort between the Department of Health and Human Resources and the foster families who provide loving and stable temporary homes for children. Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg presented a proclamation to the Foster Parent Association. At the ceremonies, left to right, were: Tom Popdan, Kathy Lynn, Rosemary Popdan, Councilmember Trachtenberg, Donna McDonald, Heather Felsen, Judy Matthews and David and Cheryl Shive.

 

GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS … The Montgomery County Council on Jan. 22 joined the campaign against gun violence by showing its support of Reaching Out To Others Together (ROOT). ROOT is a non-profit organization, founded in June 2002, that is committed to advocacy, awareness and education to reduce the number of incidents of youth violence and gun violence perpetrated by and against youth. At the proclamation presentation in Rockville were, left to right: Ava Harrison of ROOT; Kevin Dwyer, an educational and child mental health consultant; Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg; Kenneth Barnes, Sr.,  who founded ROOT following the murder of his son; Franklin Tucker of ROOT; and Councilmembers Valerie Ervin, Nancy Floreen and Marc Elrich.

 

FIGHTING FOR RIGHTS … Montgomery County Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg (at podium) has proposed legislation that would outlaw discrimination against trans gender people. Helping explain the need for the bill at an Oct. 2 news conference in Rockville were, left to right: Dan Furmansky, executive director of Equality Maryland; Dana Beyer, a trans gender person who is on the staff of Councilmember Trachtenberg; Councilmember Marc Elrich, a co-sponsor of the legislation; and Ron Halber, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council.

 

TAKING A BITE OUT OF TRANS FATS … Montgomery County Councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg (front right) on Monday, March 26, hosted a food tasting event in Rockville to demonstrate the benefits of cooking without trans fats. On March 27, she will introduce a bill that would make Montgomery County the first county in the U.S. to ban trans fats in restaurant-cooked foods. Among those at the March 26 event were Jeff Black (front left), who has eliminated trans fats in most foods cooked in his four restaurants. Also attending were (back, left to right): Councilmembers Marc Elrich and George Leventhal and Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
