To encourage
the growth of its biotech industry, Montgomery County set
aside 288 acres along the I-270 Technology Corridor to develop
the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center, a biotechnology research
and development park. The center is home to the Institute
for Genomic Research (TIGR), the University of Maryland,
The Johns Hopkins University, Otsuka America Pharmaceutical,
Inc., Microbiological Associates and several health care
delivery centers. NIH, Human Genome Sciences and Large Scale
Biology have leased part of the newly constructed, 150,000
square-foot Key West Research Center, with another 80,000-feet
to be completed.
