Landfill Operations

Overview of Landfills

Montgomery County has two closed municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills:

  1. the Gude Landfill, which operated from the 1960s through May 1982, and
  2. the Oaks Landfill, which operated from June 1982 through October 1997. Currently, there are no operating MSW landfills in Montgomery County.

Since the Oaks Landfill stopped receiving waste, all burnable MSW that comes to the County Processing Facility and Transfer Station is loaded into transfer containers and rail hauled to the County Resource Recovery Facility (RRF), located near Dickerson, MD for incineration.  Yard Trim material, such as leaves and grass, is received and processed at the Transfer Station, and is also rail-hauled to the County Composting Facility, located near Dickerson, MD.

The ash produced from the RRF and other non-processible rubble (DOT-type material) that is delivered to the Processing Facility and Transfer Station are transported via rail and truck to the Brunswick Waste Management Facility, Inc. (BWMF) landfill, located in Brunswick County, Virginia. The County’s contract with BWMF is for 15 years, with an option for a 5-year extension. Recyclable rubble, such as clean asphalt, dirt, and concrete are taken to local rubble recycling facilities such as Clean Earth in Hagerstown, MD.
