Welcome to your new home!

One of the first services you will surely need is refuse and recycling collection. Arranging for either or both services is simple, and participation is easy.  We look forward to your help as we strive towards reaching our goal of recycling 50% of our waste stream!

Recycling

Montgomery County provides once-a-week curbside recycling collection for all single-family homes and townhomes. To find out what your recycling day is, use our Collection Day Lookup. You may also contact the Division of Solid Waste Services on-line or at 240-777-6410. If you need a blue recycling bin, order one on-line.

If you live in an apartment or condominium, check with your property manager for recycling and trash collection information for your building or complex.

For general recycling information, explore our web site! Or, call us at 240-777-6410.

Montgomery County promotes grasscycling, composting and mulching for handling your yard trimmings.

There are six "recycling holidays," as a result of which your collection day may be shifted. These are: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. When your recycling day falls on the actual day (not the observed day) of these holidays, collection will be made the next day. To accomodate this holiday collection "slide," all other scheduled recycling collections for the remainder of the week will also occur one day later than usual.

Trash Collection

In its southern parts, Montgomery County provides trash collection service through contracts with independent refuse collection companies. Collection fees and prepaid disposal charges are included on your property tax bill. Trash collection in these areas is once a week, and occurs on the same day as your recycling day.

In the remainder of the County, residents contract with and pay independent trash collection companies or haulers. Look in the phone book under "Rubbish and Garbage Removal" for names of companies. As you negotiate your contract, note that the amount you pay your hauler should be for collection services only. You are already paying for the cost of disposal through the prepaid disposal charge that is paid through your property tax bill.

To find out whether you are in the County trash collection area or whether you need to contract individually for your own service, use our Collection Day Lookup. You may also contact the Division of Solid Waste Services on-line or at 240-777-6410.

What about my moving boxes?

Corrugated cardboard is a valuble item, and is very recyclable!  If you have curbside paper collection, just prepare it for your recycling day. Questions? Contact the Division of Solid Waste Services on-line or at 240-777-6410.

Yikes! I have chemicals and paints I don't want!

In the process of unpacking, you may find yourself the not-so-proud owner of paints, herbicides, pesticides, and other products you no longer need or want.  Or, the previous residents of your home may have left some of these products behind.  Proper disposal of household hazardous wastes is very important to human and pet health, and to that of the environment.  Simply take your unwanted household hazardous wastes to one of the County's frequent collections.  This service is free of charge to County residents!

Recycling at Work

Remember to recycle at work, too.  In fact, businesses in Montgomery County are required to recycle.  Learn more about our Non-Residential Recycling Program.

Residents of Municipalities

If you live in a municipality, please check with your local town or city office for recycling and trash collection details.
