The Director's Office provides the overall management for the Department of Public Works and Transportation. The Department's mission covers a wide array of duties including: solid waste disposal/management; construction and maintenance public buildings - including school facilities; and management of the County's transportation system.
The Office of the Director's primary functions focus on general administrative tasks for the entire Department and coordinating transportation policy issues. Within the Director's Office there are three primary units: Management Services; Transportation Policy; and the Office of Real Estate.

Infrastructure Finance and Special Projects

Development and management of programs to assist with funding of public infrastructure needs, with a focus on transportation facilities. Major activities include: Impact Tax Program, Loophole Property Administration Program, and Developer Financial Agreements Master/Sector Plan Transportation Review

DPWT review of recommended future transportation elements during the course of master/sector plan updates prepared by the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission.
Regional Transit Program Coordination

Coordinate with WMATA and MDOT, operators of rail transit systems in the County, to ensure County interests are represented.
Regional Coordination

Represent the County for regional transportation and air-quality planning activities within the Greater Metropolitan Washington Region. Much of this effort is performed under the auspices of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (WashCOG).
State Highway Program

Coordinate with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) on issues relating to the network of State-maintained roads in the County. All roads with route numbers (i.e. I-270, US 29-Columbia Pike, MD 97-Georgia Ave., MD 191-Bradley Blvd., etc.) are maintained by the State.
Office of Real Estate

The Office of Real Estate is responsible for an extensive leasing program, leasing and administering over 600,000 square feet of space in over 70 locations at an annual cost of over $13 million dollars to fulfill County space needs. Our revenue leasing program leases out over 1 million square feet of County space at 245 locations, generating $4.5 million dollars annually.
