HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ASSIST PEERS REGISTER TO VOTE
The Board of Elections, in cooperation with the Board of Education, trained high school students to serve as Voter Registrars in order to register their peers to vote. Students at 24 public and 7 private county high schools registered to vote during two high school voter registration drives held in the winter of 2007 and spring of 2008. These drives were held in conjunction with the election for the student representative on the Board of Education. During the drive, 2,407 Montgomery County public and private high school students registered to vote. Students must be 18 years of age to be eligible to vote in any election in the State of Maryland.
Party distribution of the registered students included 1,471 Democrats, 468 Republicans, and 468 who declined to affiliate with one of the two major political parties. Since 1971 the annual drives have registered 127,338 voters in Montgomery County.
Students who will reach their 18th birthday by November 4, 2008, and didn’t register to vote during one of these registration drives, are eligible to vote. For more information contact the Board of Elections at 240-777-VOTE (8683) or visit the website at www.777vote.org.
