LEGGETT ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO BUY LOCALLY GROWN FOOD WITH THE “BUY LOCAL CHALLENGE”
County Executive Isiah Leggett today joined local farmers to promote the “Buy Local Challenge,” being held through July 26. The challenge encourages residents to buy locally grown food to support the County’s agricultural economy. “We are very fortunate to have the Lewis Orchard Farm, and more than 500 other farms producing agricultural products right here in the County,” said Leggett, who spoke at the Lewis Orchard Farm in Dickerson. “When we buy locally, we all have the opportunity to meet the farmers who produce our food, see where it comes from, learn more about the rich history of agriculture in Montgomery County and help stimulate our local economy.” This week’s “Buy Local Challenge” coincides with Montgomery County’s 20th Annual Farm Tour & Harvest Sale being held Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26. The farm tour offers residents an opportunity to “buy local” while visiting 13 participating farms. To commemorate the Farm Tour and Harvest Sale, Leggett presented each of the participating farms a certificate to thank them for their commitment and contribution to agriculture in Montgomery County.

SUMMER SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE – ENGAGE YOUR BUSINESS The Montgomery County Volunteer Center has launched its summer Season of Service - Ready to Learn! - encouraging Montgomery County residents, businesses, service clubs, and other groups to conduct school supply drives to benefit low-income students Nearly 40,000 Montgomery County Public School students this past school year came from households that were eligible for free and reduced priced meals. Glen Echo Park celebrates Montgomery County's 12th Annual Heritage Days Weekend on Saturday, June 27 with activities highlighting the Park's vibrant history. The historic Spanish Ballroom will be opened to the public and will feature displays that tell the story of Glen Echo Park from the late nineteenth century to 1960. The 1921 Dentzel carousel – a longtime Park favorite – will open at 12:00 pm. National Park Service rangers will lead a tour of the entire park and special craft activities will be on hand for children. At A Wider Circle, we are celebrating the summer with our first annual Summer Fun Run! In the spirit of community wellness and fun, bring your family and help A Wider Circle serve more of our neighbors in need in the coming months! There is no cost to register for the run, though we are asking each runner or family to gather $125 in pledges from their workplaces, family members, or community groups. Why $125? Because of the grassroots nature of our work, $125 allows A Wider Circle to provide beds, dressers, and otherwise completely furnish the homes of FIVE families. Thirteen farms will participate this year on Saturday July 25 and nine will reopen for a second day on Sunday July 26. The farms will be open to visitors from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. IRS ISSUE FINAL RULES, READ MORE The Internal Revenue Service July 22 issued final rules (T.D. 9454) describing the time and manner in which certain tax-exempt organizations not currently required to file an annual information return under tax code Section 6033(a)(1) are required to submit an annual electronic notice including certain information required by section 6033(i)(1)(A) through (F). At the same time, IRS removed temporary regulations (T.D. 9366) issued in 2007. IRS said the regulations affect tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are not normally in excess of $25,000. The rules are effective July 23, the day they will be published in the Federal Register. They are applicable to annual periods beginning after 2006, IRS said. SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM Facts: Approximately 27% of children in Montgomery County or 37,640 students are eligible for free or reduced meals each school year. The Summer Food Service Program feeds an average of 6,000 – 7,000 children each day at 105 sites throughout the county. Would you like to increase that number? One way to do this is by increasing the number of locations that provide Summer Food Programs. Would you like to get involved? Once a site is qualified to participate in the Summer Food Service Program, all children at the site are eligible to receive meals at no cost! Background: The Summer Food Service Program was created in 1976 to ensure that children in lower income areas could continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months when school breakfast and lunches are not available. The program provides breakfast and lunch to children and teenagers, 18 years and younger, at approved sites. Persons over 18 years of age who have been determined mentally or physically handicapped and who participate in a public or private non-profit school program for the handicapped during the school year are eligible to receive meal benefits. LITERACY TUTORS NEEDED Can you help promote literacy in Montgomery County? Close to 125,000 residents, about 14% of the total population of Montgomery County cannot read, write, or speak English at a functional level. The Literacy Council of Montgomery County (LCMC) seeks volunteers to teach adults to read, write and speak English. LCMC offers two programs: (1) Basic Literacy, for adults who already speak English; (2) English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), which offers conversational help as well as reading and writing instruction. The number of students receiving our services is directly dependent on the number of volunteers willing to serve as tutors. Currently, over 200 adults are waiting for a tutor; most will wait 6-12 months to get one. Tutors provide free one-on-one or small group tutoring to adults who live or work in Montgomery County. No foreign language skills are necessary. Tutors complete an orientation session and a training workshop, where they learn a proven, easy-to-use teaching method. Orientations are scheduled for June 24, June 29, July 28, and August 5 in Rockville and Silver Spring. CHILDREN’S INN NEEDS BI-LINGUAL VOLUNTEERS The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health is a residential "place like home" for sick children and their families. Children come from across the country and around the world to stay together with their families in The Inn’s healing environment while receiving groundbreaking medical treatments at the NIH, the world’s leading biomedical research center. While the NIH takes care of the child’s medical needs, The Inn tends to the child’s heart, soul and spirit. Volunteers are needed to staff the welcome desk and assist with educational programming. Welcome Desk volunteers greet families as they arrive at The Inn and provide front-line customer service in person and by telephone. Educational Aides provide English tutoring to non-English speaking residents. Volunteers typically serve once a week or every other week.
