FIRE AND BURNS

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Set hot water heater to 120 degrees F or less.
  • Always be with your child when he or she is in the bathroom or kitchen.
  • Always test the water temperature before putting a child in the bathtub or shower; put your whole hand in the water, spread your fingers wide and move your hand back and forth through the water for several seconds to check for hot spots.
  • Keep child away from hot foods and liquids (coffee, soup, boiling water).
  • Use back burners and/or turn pot handles to the back of the stove when cooking.
  • Keep appliance cords out of children's reach, especially if the appliances contain hot liquids.
  • Keep all matches, gasoline, lighters and all other flammable materials out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Install smoke detectors in your home on every level and in every sleeping area. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
  • Don't allow smoking in your home.
  • Plan escape routes.

DROWNING

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Never leave a child unsupervised in the bathroom or around even small amounts of water (children can drown in as little as one inch of water).
  • Empty all containers, especially buckets, immediately after use and store out of reach.
  • Never leave a child unsupervised near a body of water, including wading pools, spas, fishponds, swimming pools, and lakes.
  • Install four-sided pool fencing, at least five feet high and equipped with self-closing and self-latching gates, that completely surrounds the pool itself and prevents direct access from the house and yard.
  • Always have your child wear personal flotation device when on boats or near natural bodies of water (e.g. lakes, oceans).

FALLS

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Do not use baby walkers.
  • Use safety gates at the top
  • Move chairs and furniture
  • Do not leave child alone on bed, changing table or sofa.
  • Always strap child into high chair or stroller.

MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Always use child safety seats correctly every time you ride.
  • Read your child safety seat instruction manual and your motor vehicle owner manual for directions on proper installation. Some vehicles require supplemental attachment hardware to ensure proper fit of child safety seats.
  • Only buy child safety seats with a certification label that shows that it meets or exceeds Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard

  • Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline (1-800-424-9393) to see if any recalls or safety notices have been issued on your child safety seat.

PEDESTRIAN INJURIES

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Always stop at the edge or curb of a road.
  • Listen and look left-right-left for traffic before crossing.
  • Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
  • Always hold child's hand when near streets or crossing streets or in parking lots.
  • Always be with child when in an unfenced area.

POISONING

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Keep all household solutions and medicines out of child's reach (including child's medicines).
  • Label poisons and medicines with MR. YUK stickers and teach child what they mean.
  • Keep phone number of nearest Poison Control Center by telephone, along with other emergency phone numbers.
  • Keep syrup of ipecac on hand; use only if advised by physician or Poison Control Center.

CHOKING

PREVENTION MEASURES

  • Keep coins, buttons, jewelry and other small items out of child's reach.
  • Never feed child small hard foods such as peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs, or grapes.
  • Do not allow child to play with small toy parts, balloons, marbles, or small balls.
