SUFFOCATION
Prevention Measures

  • Always place infants on their backs.
  • Use a flat, firm mattress.
  • Use bedding that is less than 1/2 inch thick.
  • Never use pillows, comforters, or infant cushions in crib.
  • Keep plastic bags out of baby's reach.

MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES
Prevention Measures

  • Always use child safety seats correctly every time you ride.
  • Read your child safety seat instructions manual and you motor vehicle owner's manual for directions on proper installation. Some vehicles require supplemental attachment hardware to ensure proper fit of child safety seats.
  • Only buy child safety seats with a certification label that shows that it meets or exceeds Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 213.
  • Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Auto Safety Hotline (1-800-424-9393) to see if any recalls or safety notices have been issued on your child safety seat.

CHOKING
Prevention Measures

  • Keep coins, buttons, jewelry and other small items out of baby's reach.
  • Never feed baby small hard foods such as peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs, or grapes.
  • Do not allow baby to play with small toy parts, balloons, marbles, or small balls.

FIRE AND BURNS
Prevention Measures

  • Set hot water heater to 120 degrees F or less.
  • Never leave your child alone, especially in the bathroom or kitchen.
  • Always test the water temperature before putting a child in the bathtub or shower.
  • Keep infant away from hot foods and liquids (coffee, soup, boiling water).
  • Use back burners and/or turn pot handles to the back of the stove when cooking.
  • Keep appliance cords out of reach, especially if the appliances contain hot liquids.
  • Install smoke detectors in your home on every level and in every sleeping area. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
  • Don't allow smoking in your home.
  • Plan escape route.

DROWNING
Prevention Measures

  • Never leave a child unsupervised in the bathroom or around even small amounts of water (children can drown in as little as one inch of water).
  • Empty all containers, especially buckets, immediately after use and store out of reach.

FALLS
Prevention Measures

  • Do not use baby walkers.
  • Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.
  • Move chairs and furniture away from windows.
  • Do not leave child alone on bed, changing table or sofa.
  • Always strap child into high chair or stroller.
