SENIOR SERVICES

Health Promotion Program

 

 

Health Promotion Program, Department of Health and Human Services, Aging and Disability Services, 240-777-1350,  collaborates with government and community partners to improve, expand and promote health and wellness opportunities for seniors that address physical, cognitive and emotional health factors vital for successful aging.

 

For example, a program designed by the National Council on the Aging and the Center's for Disease Control called Active Options is now available to County residents.  Active Options is a website that links users to physical activity programs in the County.

 

Other activities include partnering with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.) to bring free Bone Builders exercise classes to various County locations, and creating the Montgomery County Coalition on End-of-Life Care to help residents understand end-of-life choices and available resources. 

 

Montgomery County Recreation Department’s Senior Programs provide a variety of health promotion, exercise and leisure activities. Five senior centers are open five days a week; 12 neighborhood senior programs housed in community centers and senior apartment buildings meet once or twice per week. 

 

The Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Services hosts several multicultural health initiatives. Priority issues have included cardiovascular health, diabetes and hepatitis B, among others.

 

Local hospitals offer a range of education and support on various health topics. They also provide exercise programs such as Senior Fit and Senior Shape; mall walking programs; aquatics programs; and others.

 

Holy Cross Hospital provides operational support to Senior Source, a partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services that offers an array of health and wellness educational classes, health screenings, and intellectually stimulating programs for active senior adults 55 year of age and older .

 

Suburban Hospital sponsors OASIS, an educational program servicing many needs of the older community, including health promotion.
