Information and Support Groups

The American Homeschool Association
Created in 1995 to connect homeschoolers on a national level. This website provides information about the association, a discussion list, information and news of interest to homeschoolers.

Baltimore-Washington Home Educators (BWHE)
BWHE is an e-list designed to facilitate communication and networking between members of the Baltimore-Washington area inclusive homeschool support groups. These are groups which accept all members, without requiring a statement of faith or particular educational philosophy. Groups currently participating in BWHE include Howard County Home Educators (HCHE), Columbia Homeschool Community (CHC), North County Home Educators (NCHE - Anne Arundel County), Montgomery Home Learning Network (MHLN), Maryland Home Education Association (MHEA), and more.

Baltimore/Washington Homeschooled Teens (BWHomeEdTeens)
A e-list of home educated teens (ages 13 through 18) in the Baltimore/Washington area. A place for sharing experiences, meeting friends, and setting up events for the teens in our area.

Christian Home Educators Network (CHEN)
CHEN is a non-profit corporation serving as a network to connect Christian home schooling families throughout the state of Maryland.

Columbia Homeschool Community
The Columbia Homeschool Community is an inclusive and diverse homeschool group offering homeschool enrichment, field trips and cooperative activities, socialization and support for the entire homeschool family, serving the greater Baltimore-Washington area.

Maryland Association of Christian Home Educators (MACHE)
MACHE exists to support Christian home schooling families and group leaders in the state of Maryland. They provide a quarterly newsletter to member families and groups, offer a discount for membership in the Home School Legal Defense Association, and host an annual curriculum fair, symposiums, workshops, and other events.

Maryland Home Education Association (MHEA)
MHEA was founded in 1980 to serve and support families of all religious, philosophical and ethnic persuasions. On their website, you will find information about starting to homeschool in Maryland, legal issues, their annual conference, and the MHEA newsletter. For additional information contact: Manfred W. Maryland Homeschool
An e-list for a diverse group of homeschoolers from throughout the state of Maryland. Used for sharing resources, locating support, and general discussion.

Maryland Unschooling Family Connection (Maryland UFC)
Maryland UFC is a support group for unschooling families in the central Maryland area. For more information, send an email to ElissaJC@concentric.net or call Elissa Cleaveland at (301) 571-4345.

Montgomery Home Learning Network(MHLN)
MHLN offers an all-inclusive, monthly support group which meets at various locations, an annual membership directory, and a monthly newsletter for homeschooling families in Montgomery County. Also maintain a list of members willing to mentor others. Takoma Park Home Learning Network (TPHLN)
TPHLN is a non-sectarian homeschooling group which meets monthly at the Takoma Park Library.

Traditions of Roman Catholic Homes (T.O.R.C.H.)
T.O.R.C.H. is a support group for homeschooling and other families -- one with a particularly Catholic flavor although it is open to anyone who wishes to join. There are activities aimed at homeschooled children, family activities, and activities for parents. For information on the regional association contact Paula Hoppel, phoppel@msn.com

Montgomery County T.O.R.C.H Chapter
Sponsors monthly meetings, field trips, weekly co-op, virtues-based groups, parents' activities, and more.

Umbrella Groups

These umbrella groups, although religious organizations, are open to persons of other religions. Other umbrella groups may accept only persons of their own faith. The Learning Community (TLC)
The Learning Community is a private religious school operated by The Community Inc., a non-denominational religious organization in Annapolis, Maryland. Founded in 1984, The Learning Community is registered with the Nonpublic Schools branch of the Maryland State Department of Education and operates a state approved homeschool program in full compliance with the Bylaw on Home Instruction. The Learning Community accepts enrollment throughout the year and supports homeschoolers all over the world. Enrollment in The Learning Community exempts families from review by their local school district.

The Excelsior Academy
The Excelsior Academy is a Maryland State-approved umbrella program open to all Maryland homeschoolers regardless of location, educational philosophy, or religion. Contact Wendy Bush, Director, at connect@pobox.com or 410-654-6760.

Churchville Christian School
Churchville Christian School has been in operation for over a decade. It is one of the largest state-approved umbrella programs in Maryland. Contact the organization at admin@churchvillechristianschool.org or 410-734-9174.

Many Paths of Natural Learning
An inclusive non-denominational umbrella group, that is recognized by Maryland's Department of Education to supervise homeschool instruction.

Home Educator's Family Times
