Montgomery County provides special credits to veterans participating in examinations for appointment to Merit System positions that are announced to the general public. On such examinations, eligible veterans who score in the highest rating category will receive consideration for employment prior to all non-veteran candidates in the same rating category, except for disabled employees and employees subject to reduction-in-force. In order to qualify for veteran's credit, you must be a Maryland resident and must meet all of the following criteria:
- Maryland residency for at least 5 consecutive years immediately before applying;
- honorably discharged from a branch of the United States armed services after at least 180 days of active military duty that ended within 5 years of the date of application;
- not granted a normal retirement from the United States armed services;
- have not already used veteran's credit to receive priority consideration for appointment to a Montgomery County position; and
- applied for veteran's credit by completing the required Veteran's Credit form, ensuring that it was received by the closing date of the announced vacancy or submitted the information on-line through the on-line application process.
You will be asked to complete Veterans Preference information as part of the on-line application process. If you want to be considered for veteran’s preference, you must answer “yes” to the first question “Are you claiming veteran’s preference?” and answer the other five (5) follow-up questions.
Prior to appointment to a Merit System position, eligible veterans will be required to submit a copy of form DD 214 for verification of military discharge information and a notarized affadavit for verification of residency status.
