GERMANTOWN
POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INTIATIVE
As a key strategy in County Executive Ike Leggett’s
Positive Youth Development Initiative, three communities were selected to
pilot community-based collaborations – the
Long Branch area of Silver
Spring,
Wheaton and Germantown.
These CBC’s are being
used as a forum for identifying and mobilizing resources to create vital,
quality support and opportunities for youth. The first Germantown
Community-Based Collaboration (CBC) meeting was held on September 26, 2007.
Sixty people attended representing community providers, youth, civic
and faith-based organizations, government, education, parents, community
leaders, and the business sector; groups that characterize the Germantown
community and its cultural diversity. The event was designed to provide
opportunities to introduce community members, and to provide a brief
orientation and overview of the charge to the CBC.
After opening remarks from County Executive Ike Leggett, the group
jumped into action and immediately started an intense discussion on issues,
challenges, opportunities and proposal ideas for youth. Since the initial
meeting, many challenges and goals have been met, creating great
partnerships and opportunities for our Germantown Youth. Please feel free to
review our accomplishments!
