Office of Community Partnerships - Montgomery County, MD

African Community

Montgomery County is home to over 38,000 African-born residents. The diversity within the Continental African community is tremendous and demonstrates the diversity of all communities within the County.

In 2006, more than 38,000 of Montgomery County's residents were born in Africa. Continental Africans make up over 4% of the County's population. Ethiopians make up the largest proportion of continental African immigrants. Ghanaians, Nigerians, Kenyans, Egyptians, Liberians, and South Africans are also well represented in the County. Ethiopia is the country with the second-fastest growing immigrant population in the County (China is the first).

OCP is committed to bringing together this vibrant and diverse community to tackle issues of common concerns.

We will work closely with residents and community groups to address some common barriers to these communities including language access, connection with government and other communities, service delivery to these communities, and a range of other issues identified from the Leadership Summit in October 2007.

2000 U.S. Census and 2006 American Community Survey data provided by the Montgomery County Planning Department.
