Asian American CommunityAsian Americans are Americans of Asian descent, with origins from Asian countries, including regions of: Afghanistan , Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste (East Timor), Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam. Asian American is a fluid definition in that some countries on the Asian continent are not considered Asian countries culturally, but rather Middle Eastern countries (Iran, Saudi Arabia) or Western countries. Asian Americans make up about 4.4% of the total U.S. population, 5% of Maryland population and about 13.5% of Montgomery County residents. Asian Americans tend to live along coastal states, such as California, Hawaii, New York, New Jersey, and the national capital region. The Greater DC area is now the 5th largest Asian American community in the nation and Maryland ranks 7th in the nation in percentage of Asian population. States with the higher percent of Asian population are (in order of ranking): HI, CA, NJ, NY, WA, NV, and MD. Asian American communities are highly diverse in religions, languages, ethnicities, and cultures. The term Asian American often includes the broad definition of permanent residents of United States who are not American citizens and those of Pacific Islander heritage. A wide array of religions is followed by Asian Americans such as Christianity, Islam, Hindu, Buddhism, and Shinto. Major languages spoken other than English include: Mandarin and Cantonese (China), Khalka Mongolian (Mongolia), Korean (North and South Korea), Japanese (Japan), Hindi and Bengali (India), Urdu (Pakistan), Nepali (Nepal), Thai (Thailand), Vietnamese (Vietnam), Khmer (Cambodia), Tagalog (Philippines), Sinhala (Sri Lanka), Lao (Laos), Dzongkha (Bhutan), Burmese (Myanmar), Portuguese (Macau), Cantonese (Hong Kong), Malay (Brunei), Malay (Malaysia), Malay and Mandarin and Tamil (Singapore), Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesia). In the U.S., Asian Americans are 33% native born, and of the 67% foreign born, 56% are naturalized. Sources:

Lily Qi (pronounced "Chee") is Montgomery County's Asian and Middle Eastern American Liaison and Coordinator of Montgomery County's Language Access work for people with limited English proficiency. A professional in public affairs and communication, Lily held executive and managerial positions in several industries including financial regulation, economic development, and higher education prior to joining Montgomery County government. Her broad-based professional credentials, knowledge on multicultural issues, and experience working with diverse communities both in professional and community capacities have prepared her for her current job. Growing up in Shanghai, China, Lily came to the United States in 1989 to pursue higher education. Her experience and early struggles as an adult immigrant compels her to be a cultural broker and connector with the growing global community in Montgomery County and to speak on policies, issues and experiences related to immigration, Asian Americans, women, and cultural competency. Lily currently serves on the board of Leadership Montgomery, and was appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley as Vice Chair of the Governors Commission for Asian Pacific American Affairs. She served on the Montgomery County Commission for Women and as president of the Greater DC Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans. Lily has an MBA in Marketing from American University and a MA in Organizational Communication from Ohio University. She lives in North Potomac, Maryland with her husband and son.
