Proper Disposal of Bulk and Other Unwanted Items

The Division of Solid Waste Services has detailed information on how to properly dispose of trash and waste:

Please note the following restrictions:

  • Medical and pathological wastes, chemicals, pesticides and other hazardous or toxic wastes may not be disposed of at the Transfer Station in Derwood.
  • Motor oil and antifreeze may be disposed of at the Transfer Station. Waste motor oil might also be accepted at many participating service stations. Call your local auto service station for additional assistance.
  • Auto batteries may be disposed of only at the Transfer Station.
  • Up to four passenger-vehicle-sized tires may be taken to the Citizen's Unloading Area at the Transfer Station at one time.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

The Household Hazardous Waste Program is open to Montgomery County residents with home-generated hazardous waste. The County also offers a special disposal program for businesses and small-quantity generators of hazardous waste called EcoWise. To participate in EcoWise, you must register with the Division of Solid Waste Services by calling 311.
