Erosion and sediment control stormwater management structures used during construction in Special Protection Areas (SPAs) (and as part of other construction projects) are shown below. Also shown are stormwater management facilities which are part of the urban infrastructure and function after the construction phase is complete. Both help to reduce the impact of stormwater runoff from urban construction, and later, urban surfaces such as roads, parking lots and roofs, on local streams.
This pond acts as a sediment trap, and it includes a gravel baffle board.
Dual basins in series allow sediment to be removed.
The forebay, with a sand filter beneath it, allows water to be held temporarily where it can infiltrate into the ground before being held in the pond.
A perforated riser in a sediment basin traps sediment in a construction area.
Once construction is complete, stormwater management facilities are installed and made operational. These facilities include both surface and underground components. Here in the Greenway Village area of the Clarksburg SPA, water quality treatment devices are being installed as part of a multi-stage stormwater control treatment train. Runoff will be treated here first to reduce grit and pollutants, then it will be sent into a pond to control the quantity of flow that is discharged into local streams.
