In Memorium: Norman Berthaut

Norm Berthaut at SOS launch

Norm Berthaut, right, and Gaurav "GP" Pal at the June, 2009, launch of
Montgomery County's Stimulus Opportunities System database.

Our dear friend and colleague, Norm Berthaut, passed away peacefully on August 21 surrounded by loved ones. He was a tremendous asset to the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development and the void left by his passing will never be filled. Like so many others who were drawn to Norm by his intelligence, insight, unique charm and warmth, we are deeply grieved and bewildered by his sudden and unexpected death. He will be sorely missed.

Norm joined the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development in March of 2006 as part of the Marketing & Business Development team focusing on IT and government contracting. He brought extensive business development and marketing management experience, with over 25 years of general and marketing management in the information technology industry in both commercial and government sectors.

His prior experiences included Vice President of Marketing for MARKESSl; Vice President/General manager of INPUT, the leading federal market research and consulting firm for government contractors.

Norm's professional experience encompassed many significant management positions at division, area, region, district and branch levels with
IBM in sales, business development, marketing management, and marketing planning, over a 30 year career including being selected as the divisional branch manager of the year in one of IBM’s premier Federal Branch offices that supported the Executive Office of the President, Congress, major intelligence agencies, and major civilian agencies.

He was recognized many times as an outstanding
IBM manager including Divisional Manager of the year, District Branch Manager of the year, Senior Member of the 100% Club and the Golden Circle and several significant innovation divisional awards. In addition he coauthored the first ever IBM marketing plan for IT professional services.

He was an active participant in and contributor to industry groups; spoke frequently at industry meetings, and authored many market research studies, marketing plans, and marketing programs. He also taught federal contracting and marketing plan classes at Montgomery College.  He earned a Masters Degree Equivalence in Applied Management from the University of Maryland, and a BS in Business Administration & Marketing from the University of New Orleans.

Cards should be sent to 9914 Foxborough Circle, Rockville, MD, 20850. Also, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be sent to the American Heart Association.
