What types of on-site generation is appropriate for this area?
The most common renewable on-site generation systems in Maryland are solar panels, or photovoltaic (PV) arrays. This equipment captures energy from the sun and turns it into electricity. It is a great technology and, through incentives and credits, is now more affordable. Click here to learn more about solar technology.
Small wind is also possible in the northern part of the country where there are larger parcels of land. However, please note that strong wind resources are needed for this technology to be really cost-effective. Click here to learn more about wind power.

Incentives help, but what will my return on investment be?
The return on investment, or payback period, for the installation of solar panels and equipment depends on several factors: the estimated price of electricity, the home's or building's electricity demand, the size of the system you install, and available incentives. Fortunately there is a web tool to help you: www.findsolar.com This web site will help you estimate the up-front costs of installing a solar photovoltaic system and find a solar professional nearby.
Where can I find a professional solar installer?
There are several professional solar photovoltaic installers in our region. However, just like any service it is good to get a reference. The web site www.findsolar.com also has a tool to help you find a reputable professional in your area. Many installers are pleased to show you their other projects and jobs if you would like an example of their work.
Are other renewable energy technologies eligible for rewards?
Other clean energy technologies may be suitable for Montgomery County, but may only be effective in specific applications or areas. The Clean Energy Rewards program will consider those systems other than solar photovoltaic that utilize eligible clean energy sources such as wind and sustainable biomass. DEP will work with on-site generation owner/operators to determine the eligibility of the system and the amount of electricity it generates.

How do I receive a rewards for the electricity I produce and use?
The Department of Environmental Protection will work with each on-site generator to determine how much energy their system generates. The reward will then be based on that system’s data. Owners must submit information about their system to DEP for review. System specifications are entered into the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) PV Watts to estimate the annual electricity generation. Then DEP calculates the reward (energy generated x $0.005) to get the total reward value. Most system owners receive a check of about $20 per year.

All applications for residents and businesses that have installed a solar PV system must be received by July 6, 2009. One-time annual rewards will be calculated for electricity generated July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2009, or from the date of installation to June 30, 2009.
