Environmental Tip!
Save energy and money!  Swap your old incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescents (CFLs). We could light 2.5 million homes a year with the amount of energy saved if every U.S. household replaced just one incandescent bulb with a CFL.  Each CFL bulb cost a little more, but it will pay for itself in mere months and they last longer than incandescent bulbs.  Learn more…



Calendar of Events 

Independence Day, Saturday, July 4, 2009 - Transfer Station Closed

Normal schedule for the Holiday week for all County-provided recycling and trash collections. Administrative offices will observe the holiday on Friday, July 3rd, but the transfer station will remain open on Friday.  Beauty spots will be closed on Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th.


The Rainscapes Rewards Rebate Program is accepting applications

We accept televisions daily at our Solid Waste Transfer Station, and monthly at our community electronics recycling events.


Marylanders Plant Trees – Save $25 off a Tree

Plant trees and be counted towards the state’s goal of 50,000 trees by 2010  and save $25 off your new tree!  Check out www.trees.maryland.gov for information and advice on where, how and what type of trees to plant, and your printable discount coupon.  After planting, register your trees and calculate the benefits they provide. Let’s make Montgomery County one of the best contributors in the State!


Leaves for Neighborhoods – Save $25 off a Tree
 
Montgomery Planning Department‘s program “Leaves for Neighborhoods” will save you green when you plant trees. Print out the coupon here to save $25 off a tree purchase of $75 or more. At nurseries participating in both this program and the state program you can use both coupons together to save the most!

Gude Landfill Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Plan

Read the full plan that DEP submitted to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) in fulfillment of MDE’s request of Montgomery County dated 1/28/2009. The plan document includes 1) the transmittal letter 2) the groundwater and surface water monitoring plan and 3) attachments which include monitoring locations and well completion reports, sampling measurement protocols and monitoring parameters. Ann English of RainScapes Finalist for Award

Congratulations to Ann English of DEP's Rainscapes Program.  Ann English was selected as one of five finalists for the Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Awards for her work at Rockville High School to revitalize the greenhouse, create a hands-on horticulture program, and install a rain garden and landscaped courtyard at the school.
