How to Apply for a Sustainable Timber Harvest/ Forest Conservation Exemption
1. Obtain a sediment control permit from the Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services
2. Obtain an Environmental Review from the DNR Natural Heritage Program documenting the presence/absence of any threatened or endangered species and/or habitat on site. Contact the Heritage Program at: 1-877-620-8DNR, option 9, Ext. 8573 or go to their website for more information.
3. Fill out Information for Sustainable Timber Harvest
4..Submit to the County Arborist in the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection via email, fax or mail (see form)
5. Obtain a letter of approval from the County Arborist at DEP
6. Review and complete the following documents under the NRI/FSD Review on the Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission Countywide Planning Division website
a Forest Conservation Exemption Requirements Notice (Under “NRI/FSD Review” heading) b. NRI/FSD and Forest Conservation Exemption Review Application (Under “NRI/FSD Review” heading)
i. Complete page 1 ii. Complete page 2, top half iii. Complete page 2, Section 3 on the bottom half; the type of exemption you are applying for is Section 22A-5(d) commercial logging and timber harvesting operation. iv. Complete page 3 v. Complete pages 4-5 Sections 1, 2 and 4.

i. Note: You are applying for a Forest Conservation Exemption Request
7. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS to submit items 1, 4 and 5 AND the fees to the Planning Department. The directions are found in this “Submission Requirements” document.
