Montgomery County Climate Protection Plan
On January 15, 2009, the Montgomery County Sustainability Working Group (SWG) presented the County’s first Climate Protection Plan to Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and the County Council. The Plan starts the County along the path of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. Its 58 actionable recommendations cover seven areas: renewable energy; residential building energy efficiency; commercial, multi-family and public building energy efficiency; transportation; forestry and agriculture; long-term planning and education and outreach.
Sustainability Working Group
What is the Sustainability Working Group (SWG)?
The Sustainability Working Group will play a critical role in helping to promote more sustainable practices in Montgomery County. It consists of 15 government and regional organization representatives and 11 public members with expertise in areas such as business, communications, land use/building, clean energy, water quality, and habitat protection.
Initially, the Group focused on a variety of climate change related initiatives as outlined in County Bill 32-07, including the development of a Climate Protection Plan. The first iteration of the Climate Protection Plan was submitted to the County Executive and County Council on January 15, 2009.
