Storm Drain Information

The storm drain system in Montgomery County has been designed to provide an immediate drainage flow to an appropriate stream or other receiving area. When operating correctly, the water will drain from the roadways and gutters, without creating sufficient ponding time for the stagnation which breeds mosquitoes to occur. Since most areas finding West Nile virus carriers, or experiencing outbreaks of the virus, are low lying, we are fortunate that Montgomery County is situated well above sea level.

If you should note a drainage structure you believe is not operating effectively, you may call the Division of Highway Services at 240.777.ROAD (7623), and DHS will make sure the storm drain is not blocked.

Some storm drain systems in other jurisdictions may be designed to hold and control the flow of water, causing more delay in allowing water to drain from drainage structures. These jurisdictions may be using pesticides in their systems because of this design.
