KENSINGTON

Background

The southeast quadrant of the Kensington commercial area is located east of Connecticut Avenue and south of the B&O tracks. There are approximately 64 retail and service businesses located within the commercial area. These businesses include professional offices, a mixture of regional serving antique shops, and retail and service entities that primarily serve local customers, including a major grocery store and several branch banks.

Project Goals
  • Strengthen economic activity and encourage the development of new businesses
  • Enhance the visual character while respecting the historic district
  • Improve pedestrian and traffic circulation, and improve parking arrangements
  • Establish a Kensington “image” using consistent gateway signage
  • Encourage building rehabilitation

KENSINGTON PARK
Project Accomplishments
  • Market Analysis and Revitalization Strategy for the entire commercial area completed.
  • Several phases of Streetscape Construction completed.
  • Antique Row gateway sign at Connecticut Avenue and Howard Avenue is in place. Three gateway signs on traffic islands defining approaches to the city are in place.
  • Several businesses and offices have taken the initiative to improve or expand their facilities.
