Ceremony Honors Award Winners of the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful (KMCB) Annual Beautification and Amateur Photography Contests

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announces 34 winners of its 24th annual Keep Montgomery County Beautiful (KMCB) community beautification awards. Seventeen amateur photographers were also honored.

2010 - 24th ANNUAL LANDSCAPING CONTEST
This contest was our way of encouraging those in our community to undertake landscape activities and neighborhood beautificaiton projects that improve the overall appearance of the County. We support beauty without toxicity by encouraging landscaping projects that utilize conservation measures which keep pesticides and fertilizers out of local streams and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. We encourage the use of native plants and the avoidance of non-native, invasive species. Read More

Any person or group maintaining commercial, public or community property in the Montgomery County was eligible. This included community groups, businesses, public institutions and other organizations undertaking landscaping projects that enhance the appearance of non-residential properties. Nominations were also submitted for County roadsides or medians, gas stations, shopping centers, schools, community associations and other public institutions.
The Award Categories:
Cityscape for municipal street plantings in median strips, near traffic ramps, and next to sidewalks:
Commercial/Retail for outdoor projects at facilities such as shopping malls, restaurants, retail businesses, ect.:
Community Non-Professional for plantings maintained by community residents through homeowner associations, garden clubs, or civic organizations:
Community Professional for landscaping projects designed and maintained by professional landscape architects or contractors:
Environmental for wildlife habitant, wildflower plantings, and wetlands plantings; organic plantings:
Public Institutional for outdoor projects at schools, government buildings, hospitals, churches or libraries:
Youth for outdoors projects implemented by one or a group of persons who are 18 years old or younger. Adult supervision is permitted, but youth must do the majority of a project:
Sustained Maintenance (For three-time winners) for awards to previous triple winners of 1st, 3rd and 5th year maintenance

2010 - 19th ANNUAL AMATEUR PHOTO CONTEST
The Amateur Photography Contest had eight (8) designated categories and provided the residents of the County with an opportunity to show off their photography skills and beauty of the County. The contest was open to amateur photographers living in Montgomery County and photos taken of Montgomery County. This annual contest celebrates the physical and natural features of the County as well as its residents.

Photos were judged by accomplished local photographers in the area; Dan Mullen, Charles Hyland and Duncan Tebow. They volunteered their time and expertise. The judging was based on originality, interest of subject matter, visual appeal, and consistency with the chosen categorical theme.
The Photography Categories:
Montgomery County By Day - Photos taken outdoors during the day that depicts something fun, beautiful or exciting during daylight hours. Montgomery County Landmarks - Photos taken outdoors of a natural or manmade commonly recognized landmark or scene. Montgomery County Her People - Photos taken of one or more persons involved in County activites, close-up or distant, showing leisure activity, productivity, or community service. Montgomery County, By Night - Photos taken outdoors that depicts something fun, beautiful or exciting during nighttime hours. Montgomery County At Work- Photos taken of one or more persons at work, contributing to the livability and splendor of our County.
