The Division of Traffic Engineering and Operations provides the following functions:

  • Manages the signing and marking programs
  • Designs and implements work zone traffic controls in public rights-of-way
  • Oversees street lighting in public rights-of-way
  • Performs traffic studies and manages neighborhood traffic controls and residential parking programs
  • Coordinates departmental review of all subdivision activity and represents the Department on the M-NCPPC Interagency Development Review Committee; reviews access, sight distances, storm drainage, and improvements to the public rights-of-way
  • Traffic safety, investigations, and planning
  • Plans, designs, constructs, operates, and maintains the Montgomery County Advance Transportation Management System (ATMS) and related infrastructure of maximizing the real time operating efficiency of the County’s road network
  • Designs, installs, maintains, and operates the transportation control monitoring and information devices and subsystems (traffic video surveillance cameras, detention systems, travelers’ advisory radio, electronic transit signs, etc.) that make up the County’s ATMS
  • Manages the operation of the County’s TransportationManagementCenter
  • Maintains the County’s aerial surveillance program for transportation management
  • Designs, constructs, and maintains the County’s fiber optic cable plant that supports FiberNet, ATMS, and the 800 MHz radio system
  • Pedestrian Safety
