The Internal Investigation Unit (IIU) is responsible for all internal investigations in the Department. DOCR is a quality professional agency and complaints that do emerge must be thoroughly investigated at all levels of the agency. This is advanced level investigative work involving research and conciliation of complaints and enforcement of applicable laws, regulations and Executive Orders. The Chief Investigator is a senior management position which reports directly to the Department Director.
The Chief Investigator is well versed in the operations of each of the five operating Divisions within the DOCR and reviews and investigates allegations of wrongdoing or inappropriate behavior/activity by staff members that are received from the Department Director.
The investigative process follows appropriate guidelines and complies with appropriate aspects and elements of collective bargaining agreements, laws, and ethics and ensures a collaborative labor relations environment.
Investigative conclusions are justified by the facts and where violations are found reports support outcomes of substance in the disciplinary process, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and in labor arbitrations or cases before the Merit System Protection Board (MSPB).
Within a quality correctional agency such investigations can be completed by internal staff in support of constitutional conditions of confinement and the ethical practice of adult correctional operations. All potential criminal matters are referred to the Police or Office of the State's Attorney for review and investigation.
