metaproterenol - Alupent®
Noisy Drug- Rescue Inhaler

Not as widely used as albuterol inhalers, metaproterenol is marketed under the brand name Alupent®, and is very similar in effect. Alupent® is used primarily as a rescue inhaler, but is also used prophylactically, often to prevent exercise-induced asthma.

Alupent® is NOT to be administered by EMTBs per Maryland Medical Protocols


Drug Action
Rapid-acting bronchodilator (Beta-2 agonist)

Indications

Respiratory distress and/or bronchospasm associated with asthma, allergic reaction, chronic bronchitis or emphysema


Contraindications

Not in Maryland Medical Protocols


Side Effects
Tachycardia, palpitations, hypertension, angina, nervousness, anxiety, muscle tremors, dizziness, headache, sweating, nausea, vomiting, sore throat

Dose
1-2 inhalations q4-6 hours
