Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pathway Program Core:
Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B)

Minimum 135 hour course including cognitive and psycho-motor skills training in accordance with the U. S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Technicians Basic.
Curriculum covers, but is not limited to, the well-being of the EMTB, vital signs, lifting and moving patients, airway management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, patient assess-ment, general pharmacology, EMTB administered medications, IV monitoring, respiratory emergencies, cardiovascular emergencies, automated defibrillation, altered mental status, allergic reactions, poisoning/overdose, diabetes, environ-mental emergencies, behavioral emergencies, prehospital childbirth, bleeding & shock, soft tissue injuries, musculo-skeletal injuries, head/neck/spine injuries, pediatric emergencies and ambulance operations.

Successful completion results in Maryland certification by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) as an Emergency Medical Technician Basic.

Course is approved by American Council of Education (CREDIT) for up to 6 semester hours at colleges and universities nationwide as a 100 level class.
Maryland EMTB certification is transferable to as many or more states than the national Registry EMTB certification.
Certification period is for three (3) years, renewable by participating in a MIEMSS approved 24-hour minimum recertification program.
For those interested in pursuing a career in medicine, taking medical courses your junior year and EMS your senior year is an excellent preparation.

Internationl Trauma Life Support (ITLS)

A 24-hour highly skills-based program for the advanced EMTB focused on the treatment of the severely injured adult trauma patient.

Pediatric International Trauma Life Support

10-hour skills-based program for the advanced EMTB focusing on the treatment of the injured pediatric patient.
Originally developed by the Alabama chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, it is now an internationally recognized organization: International Trauma Life Support. It is endorsed by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Association of EMS Physicians. Successful completion results in a two (2) year national certification in each program as a ITLS provider.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OPERATIONS

A 24-hour training program to equip the emergency responder to remain safe during incidents involving hazardous materials. Subject matter includes the use of protective equipment and use of the DOT Hazardous Materials Handbook. This is an operational course allowing the student to begin mitigation of a hazmat incident, but does not qualitfy the student as a Hazmat technician.

When Seizures are Medical Emergencies

Three (3) hour program developed by the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota for the pre-hospital management of status epilepticus. Successful completion results in a certificate from the University of Minnesota Emergency Medicine Program.

The Missing Protocol - Writing the Legally Defensible Run Sheet

Nationally acclaimed program developed and presented by Denise Graham, RN, BSN, CLNC of MidAtlantic Medical Legal Consultants, and author of the book by the same name.

Designed to enable the EMS provider to write a clear narrative and complete run report on each call to maximize medical information and avoid legal confrontation.
A certificate is awarded by the Training Academy for successful completion

Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN)

An 8-hour program developed by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) under a federal grant to familiarize prehospital care providers with emergency situations involving technology-dependent children.

A certificate is awarded by the Training Academy for successful completion.

Metro Incidents

Two day program of familiarization with the Metro system, orientation to safety concerns, tunnel and station layout, car construction, gaining access to MetroRail cars, and evacuation procedures.

Multiple Casualty Incidents

Several days of training involving MCIs, including the Incident
Command System (ICS), Triage, and Critical Incident Stress
Management (CISM).

Tours, Field Trips & Opportunities for Experience

An afternoon tour of Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington. Includes tours of the Emergency Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and general hospital areas.

Tour of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, the world's only hospital solely devoted to trauma care. Also, a tour of SYSCOM, the statewide EMS communications system.

Two visits to hospitals in the Johns Hopkins system:
Afternoon tour (same day as Trauma Center tour) of Johns Hopkins Bayview Regional Trauma Center and the Baltimore Regional Burn Center at Bayview.
Also, a full-day trip to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a tour of this world renowned hospital. Tours of the trauma admitting areas, NICU and PICU will be included.

Tour of the USNS Comfort, T-AH 20, one of two hospital ships of the U. S. Navy. It is the seventh largest hospital in the USA, and is docked in Baltimore harbor at Dundalk. She has seen duty in the Gulf War & Iraq, but her capabilities were put most to the test in a humanitarian effort in the treatment of the resued Hatian 'boat people' in the 90's. Her sister ship, the Mercy, is docked in San Diego.

As part of orientation to medevac helicopter operations, the class will tour the Maryland State Police Aviation Trooper 8 facility in Norwood (Sorry, no flight time). If time permits, a trip may also be scheduled to visit the U.S.Park Police "Eagles' Nest".

The opportunity to provide emergency medical care to the
citizens of Montgomery County by becoming a member of a Montgomery County Volunteer Fire Department or Rescue Squad.

Academic Requirements
Unlike other high school and career/technology courses, a student who fails any of the 8 modular examinations during the program (or the Maryland Certification Examination) will be dropped from class. These students are being educated and trained to provide emergency healthcare to citizens of Montgomery County. EMT is a prerequisite for all programs in the second semester.
