County Executive Isiah Leggett and I would like to introduce you to a program that we have developed to reduce the number of unintentional fires and injuries that occur in our community. We call it the "Safety in Our Neighborhood" program. This program is being brought to you through the combined efforts of the Montgomery County of Fire and Rescue Service and the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Commission.

Last year, your County fire and rescue services responded to over 82,000 calls for help in our County. This number continues to increase annually by more than 1500 calls. Many of these calls for help are for situations where there has been an unintentional fire or injury that occurred in or around our homes. The majority of people killed or injured are our children and older citizens.

All too often, the injuries caused by falls, automobile and pedestrian crashes, fires, and other incidents could have been prevented. Stop and think about it. There is no greater personal tragedy than to have loved ones lose their lives or be terribly injured and know that it could have been prevented.

We have developed the "Safety in Our Neighborhood" program because we realize that we need YOUR help. In Montgomery County, we have the best fire, rescue and emergency medical services personnel that you can find anywhere. The problem is that the unintentional fire or injury has occurred before we leave the fire station to come and help you. We are only able to minimize the damage, care for the injured or console the survivor when we arrive. We want to reduce your risk of having an unintentional injury or illness BEFORE it occurs.

This new program is designed to help you. Please take the time to carefully review the materials included and discuss them with the members of your household. Make the effort to address the items that need attention in your home. We do not want you or your family to become the victims of preventable injuries. Taking action today can reduce the risk of tragedy tomorrow.
