Injectible Medications

Epinephrine (adrenaline) is used to intervene in the extraordinarily severe asthma attack or in a severe allergic reaction. Epinephrine is packaged in 3-ways for EMS use in asthmatics or allergic reactions. It is also packaged in metered dose inhalers and for nebulization, neither of which are covered by Maryland Medical Protocol.

NOISY Drug

Epinephrine is an adrenergic agent that is a strong sympathetic stimulator which will increase heart rate, cause vasoconstriction, bronchodilation and decongestion.

Drug Action:

Dose:

Pediatric up to age 3 years: 1 EpiPenJr (0.15 mg epinephrine).

Children age 3 years through adult: 1 EpiPen (0.3 mg epinephrine)

ALS Dose:

Adult: epinephrine 1:1000 0.3 mg SC or epinephrine 1:1000 0.3 mg with 3.0 ml NS via nebulizer - may be repeated once without medical consult.

Pediatric: 0.01 mg/kg to a maximum of 0.3mg SC or epinephrine 1:1000 0.3 mg with 3.0 ml NS via nebulizer - may be repeated twice without medical consult.
