| PIRBUTEROL
- Maxair™ |
Noisy
Drug- Rescue Inhaler |
|
Not as widely
used as albuterol inhalers, pirbuterol acetate is very similar in effect.
Pirbuterol acetate is used primarily as a rescue inhaler, but is also
used prophylactically, often to prevent exercise-induced asthma.
The Maxair™Autohaler™
works like a demand valve and automatically discharges the medication
canister as the patient inhales which mixes the dose of medication with
air quite well. It is also useful for patients who are unable to coordinate
pressing the medication canister in time with their inhalation. There
is one potentially serious drawback to the Maxair™Autohaler™:
During a severe asthma attack, the patient may not be able to move enough
air to activate the inhaler.
Pirbuterol
is NOT to be administered by EMTBs per Maryland Medical Protocols
