MCFRS On-Line Training Registration System
All MCFRS Career personnel must use the On-Line Training Registration System (OTRS) to register for Public Service Training Academy (PSTA) classes. Access to OTRS will be provided through a single sign-on web page at https://ext01.montgomerycountymd.gov/ent/s2/otrs/. This upgrade will notify you that you have been registered for the class. The present on-line registration site, e-academyonline.com site is being shut down as of 8/3/2010
The LFRD Training Coordinators will sign up all LFRD personnel for (PSTA) classes, including Paramedics.

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic : Initial Course
The primary focus of the EMT-Basic is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health systems. Students that successfully complete this course and Maryland's certifying written and practical examinations are eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT-Basic written examination with in 1 year from the date of completion of the inital course. No practical examination is necessary if with in 1 year of passing the Maryland practical examination.
- Skills Include
- Patient assessment; bleeding control and bandaging; shock management; fracture management; CPR; oxygen administration; medical emergency management; patient assisted medication administration; spinal immobilization; baby birthing; newborn and infant resuscitation; patient movement; transportation; communications.
- Course Length
- Certification Requirements
- Field internship; written and practical examinations; affiliated with an approved BLS/ALS company. Certification period is for 3 years.
- Recertification Requirements
- 24 hours of approved EMT-B refresher training; affiliation with an approved BLS/ALS company

Cardiac Rescue Technician : Initial Course
The primary focus of the Cardiac Rescue Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Cardiac Rescue Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight Cardiac Rescue Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an Advanced LIfe Support ambulance. Cradiac Rescue Tecnician's function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. The Cardiac Rescue Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system. The state of Maryland utilizes the National registry EMT-Intermedite program standards and curriculmn for the State of Maryalnad Cardiac Rescue Technician license.
- Skills Include
- Intravenous fluid administration; intraosseous cannulation; external jugular cannulation medication administration; EKG monitoring & interpretation, defibrillation/cardioversion and external transcutaneous pacing; endotracheal intubation; Combitube insertion; decompression thoracostomy.
- Hours of Training
- EMT-Basic hours, plus approx. 580 hours
- Licensure Requirements
- NREMT-I registration; successful completion of a Maryland ALS Licensing protocol exam; affilitaion with an approved ALS program.
- Relicensure Requirements
- Successful reregistration as an NREMT-I; affiliation with an approved ALS program.

Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic : Initial Course
The EMT-Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual posses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Paramedics perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an advanced life support ambulance. The Paramedic is the most advance prehospital link from the scene into the health care system.
- Skills Include
- All skills listed under EMT-B and CRT (NREMT-I); plus additional medication administration; nasotracheal intubation.
- Hours of Training
- EMT-Basic hours, plus 1000 - 1200 hours
- Licensure Requirements
- NREMT-Paramedic registration; successful completion of a Maryland ALS protocol licensing exam; affiliated with an approved ALS program. Licensure period is for 2 years.
- Relicensure Requirements
- Successful reregistration as an NREMT-P; affilation with an approved ALS program.

Advanced Life Support Continuing Education Courses
- ALS Refresher Course: consists of five (5), six hour sessions that meet and/or exceed the current standards for recertification by the National Registry of EMT's. Each session includes both didactic and practical skills.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Category II Courses: Courses that meet and/or exceed the current standards for recertification by the National Registry of EMT's.
