During stormy summer days, be prepared to
follow the 30-30 rule.
Seek shelter immediately if you see lightning then hear
thunder within 30 seconds. Do not resume an outdoor activity
such as swimming, playing ball, golfing, boating, or fishing
until 30 minutes after you have heard the last audible
thunder clap, not once the rain has stopped.
Just because it is not raining where you are, does not
mean that a storm is too far away to be dangerous. Lightning
strikes have been recorded as far as 20 miles away from
the area where rain is actually falling!
If you plan to be at an outdoor activity, check the weather
report before leaving home. Have a plan for what to do
if the weather should suddenly turn bad. Know where you
can find shelter, and do not wait too long before going
there. Never seek shelter under a tree. For safety's sake,
follow the 30 - 30 rule!
