Rodenticide

What To Look For

Rat Control Regulations and Guidelines

Purchase a single dose feeding poison. Look for the active ingredient with the name of either Brodifacoum, Bromadiolone, Bromethalin, or Cholecalciferol. Call your local hardware store for available supplies. These poisons are economical, easy to use, readily acceptable, fast acting, and antidotal with medical assistance.

ALL RODENTICIDES ARE DANGEROUS!
Store all rodenticides in the original labeled container and out of reach of the children. Rodenticides, as with all pesticides, should be used in accordance with label directions. If you suspect accidental poisoning, call your doctor or the Poison Control Center at1-800-492-2414 (Baltimore) or the National Capital Poison Center at 202-625-3333(Washington, D.C.).

How To Use Rodenticides

  • Remove all available food sources that rats are feeding from.
  • Place rodenticide packages in burrows, bait stations or suspected runways that are inaccessible to children and pets. If the package is removed by rats, wait 5 days and repeat baiting. If the package has been undisturbed for 7 days, stop baiting.
  • Once control is achieved, remove package from baited area and dispose of in accordance with label directions. Fill in the burrows with soil.
  • If burrow reopens, repeat baiting procedure.
  • Most rats will die in their burrow, but any dead rat found should not be touched. Carefully remove with plastic bag, newspapers, or shovel.

What To Do After Poisoning

  • All baiting should be completed before removal of harborage areas.
  • After poisoning has been completed, remove the harborage area if possible.
  • Elevate garbage cans and woodpiles 18 inches off of ground, remove piles of debris and abandoned vehicles, and cut any tall grass or weeds.

Garbage cans should be vermin-proof, of non-corrodible material, and be equipped with tight fitting lids. Plastic trash bags are not approved as refuse containers and are easily torn open by rats and other animals to gain access to food residues.
